On a Mission: Searching for the Perfect Statement Top
I recently saw the Miss Rythm show about the R&B legend Ruth Brown. The show was great, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the sequence and sparkly jacket the actress wore in the show. The jacket was colorful and shone so brightly under the theatre lights. The jacket fell right below the hips, it was long sleeved and it was styled with a simple jumpsuit. It was a statement piece but I thought it could also become a staple piece in anyone’s closet.
The day after the show, I saw on Instagram that Violette FR posted a video where she wore a gorgeous sequence top. It was a polo with a black sequence and colorful flower-like patterns. She styled it with white pants, pink lips and her hair down. She looked like she could go out for her morning coffee, a work meeting or go out with friends.
I’ve also been rewatching The Nanny, and the bold style of the Fine women inspired me even more to look for a statement top. I started searching online and found quite a few fun options.

This is the top Violette FR wore in her video. It’s stunning and I can’t stop thinking about it. She styled it with white pants and bright pink lips. Here’s the video where you can see it for yourself and admire it with me.
I think this top is perfect. I like the relaxed fit and slightly cropped length. It would look great over a black slip dress and fun platform sandals or with a pair of jeans and flats. You could wear it to work, zoom calls, on a walk or going out for a cocktail.

I like this jacket because the pattern is fun and unique. The cut is pretty versatile and it can be worn day or night. I’d wear it with a black long skirt and strappy sandals or light-washed jeans and loafers. You can also wear it with a mini skirt and heels and channel your inner Fran Fine.
Diamond Sequin Single Breasted Blazer by Nasty Gal
I love the length of this jacket and the relaxed fit. The pattern is fun and I love the neon colors. It can be dressed up or down, and if you want to commit to the look, you could get matching pants.
JEANETTE FOR ST. MARTIN via TRR
This is such a fun jacket. I love the color and the print of the polo players. I would wear it to a black tie event or a night out. This jacket would be such a conversation starter.
This jacket is something Grandma Yetta from The Nanny would wear to run her errands or get lost around the city. I don’t think I could pull it off without looking like I was wearing a costume, but Grandma Yetta would rock it with so much confidence and look fabulous.
