New Year's Weekend in Vienna Guide

I spent last weekend in Vienna, drawn by its magical Christmas atmosphere. The city is known for its stunning decorations and Christmas markets, making it a true winter wonderland. This guide will help you navigate your visit during the festive season, though be prepared for crowds as Vienna's winter charm attracts many visitors.

Airport Transportation

Arriving by plane? Taxis, Bolt, and Uber are convenient options, but note that many drivers may expect cash payments. Alternatively, consider trains:

  • CAT (City Airport Train): Faster but pricier. You'll see their kiosks at baggage claim, but avoid them and head to the OBB ticket machines right before the train station entrance on the right. Buy a 24/48/72-hour ticket valid for both airport and city transportation.

  • OBB Trains: More affordable and less crowded, offering direct connections to the city center.

Museums and Historical Sites

Downtown Vienna overflows with museums and historical gems, perfect for a stroll down memory lane.

  • Austrian National Library, State Hall

  • Albertina

  • Sisi Museum

  • Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

  • Vienna State Opera

  • Belvedere and Schönbrunn Palace: These palaces require at least half a day to explore due to their location and size.

Coffee and Cake/Pastry Shops

Step back in time and experience the opulence of Vienna's coffee culture at these historic and renowned cafes.

  • Sacher Hotel: Choose from the Sacher Salon, Sacher Café, or Café Bel Étage. We found that the fastest going line was to Sacher Café.

  • Cafe Central

  • Café Mozart

  • Brasserie Palmenhaus Wien

  • Café Demel

  • Vollpension

Restaurants

Indulge in delicious Viennese and international cuisine.

  • Restaurant Kanzleramt: Enjoy exceptional food and service. Include their signature "Strong Beef Soup with semolina slices" to your order, you won’t regret it!

  • Le Bol: Savor fresh French cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere. Many staff members are from the Balkans, so if you come from a Balkan country you will feel very welcomed here.

  • Hotel Babula: This hotel offers a fantastic breakfast and delicious Napolitan pizza in the evenings. Be prepared for crowds as it's a local favorite.

  • Figlmüller at Wollzeile: Choose from two locations on this street for the most renowned Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna.

Christmas Markets

While most markets close on December 26th, the one at Riesenradplatz remains open until January 7th. This will be a great opportunity to visit the iconic Prater amusement park.

Enjoy your New Year's weekend in Vienna! happy Holiday’s!
